Meet Robert…

by Jones on May 9, 2009

Yesterday I was driving away from my bank and was passing a homeless guy and thought, shucks! the light’s green I can’t give this guy 5 bucks….so I had a thought go through my mind and decided to share it on twitter. Here’s the “tweet”:

“Have U ever made a paper plane out of a $5 bill & thrown it out ur car window while passing a homeless guy? Me neither but I’ve thought about it.”

Anyway, so today I was by my bank again and there was a black homeless guy sitting in the same place. I could have sworn he was white yesterday but whatever. So I got an extra 5 dollars out of my bank and pulled over and made a paper airplane out of it. Then I drove over to the homeless guy, named Robert and asked him if I could get a picture with him. We took like 7. Had to be somewhat decent right? Anyway, I gave him the $5 plane (Sorry, white guy. You picked the wrong corner today) and asked if he minded if I posted the picture on my blog. He said he didn’t mind, and I gave him the blog url so he could see it if he ever had internet access….I hope he doesn’t pretend like he never gave me permission and then sue me. (Robert, if you’re reading this, that was a joke, you can’t actually sue me for this. That never happens….ever! I have no money)

Anyway, Robert and his wife need a place to stay. If you know of a place they can stay, he can usually be found on the corner of University Ave and…..across from the Provo Mall, by Chase and McDonalds. ;)

(……..Ok, yes. My kids were in the car waiting for Mom to get done taking pics with a homeless guy.  Is that bad?)

LOL! HILARIOUS! I was laughing so hard after reading this my husband came down stairs to see what was goin’ on. Jones, You are the epitome of crazibeautiful! You have inspired me to make a bunch of $5 airplanes just so I have them on hand! A few weeks ago while at the Jazz game with my family we encountered a similar situation where there were several homeless standing on every which corner. While driving by my daughter asked her Daddy, “Dad, what does his sign say?” My husband read the sign to her while at the stop light, “Homeless. In need of food and money,” and we tried our best to explain to her what that meant. Her little brown eyes teared up and I could see the wheels turning in her head trying to figure out a way to help the homeless man. She asked us for all the quarters out of the ash tray so we handed her a few and she rolled down her window to hand to him. The light turned green and in a panic she threw the handful of quarters at him and yelled at the top of her lungs, “Here’s money for food, my dad will come back and build you a home!” (my husband is a general contractor) She had a smile on her face the rest of the night cause she felt like she helped someone in need. Your $5 airplane would have been PERFECT that evening! I LOVE IT, gonna use it!!

OMGosh, Emily! That story is so funny! Did your husband built that homeless guy a home? lol. Did you have to explain to your daughter later why “Daddy” never did that? ;-) “Daddy” should do it :)

lol. Thank you, Evonne!

Love how the kids were in the car. Seriously. That’s how they learn about how to treat others. My sister and I love eating downtown so we can stick a few dollars in our left overs and hand them out to strangers. Geeky, I know. But I love helping two needs at once! Good luck to you Robert!

I love this. I should stop and give him a box of cupcakes. I know it won’t fix his living situation, but it will make really happy for a while! :)

I must say the whole “making a paper airplane” out of money was funny. I do things like this with the kids in the car too. I even have the kids participate. Its sweet. My daughter got a sweet potatoe pie from her gma for her bday. It was hers, and hers only. She had it in her heart to give it to a homeless person so we drove around and she was able to bless another. I had her walk up and do it. They hugged, and my daughter was so proud. She was boasting at eating this pie all morning but she felt to do this. So proud. Cute picture., I just started reading ur blog today and I cant stop reading it. Lol
